you have to be careful about what you write. *I* have to be careful about what I write.
it’s funny - I thought that no one would ever read this junk I post - that it would be simply something for me to do and for me to look back through later. I had a couple of close friends (and, of course, my mom) who read what I wrote every now and then, but really, this blog-thing is just something I do for kicks.
when I first started posting, I griped about a classmate I’d had at Taylor. I met her at a wedding and was offended by the way I felt she looked down on me (which, incidentally, was the way I felt at Taylor as well), so I wrote about it here. I was still a little upset when I posted (I’ve learned that emotional posting is a bad idea, and have removed SEVERAL). someone found that post from ages ago. I mentioned a professor’s name (she was at the table), and someone directed her attention to the post.
what a mess! I have offended a professor that I actually admired, and was *glad* to see at that wedding. I saw her at another wedding, a couple of weeks ago, having no idea she’d read what I wrote. I’m sure she thought I was being completely two-faced - I imagine that she took my complaints about that classmate as directed toward herself.
the thing is, she and my David have already talked about it with each other. I found out about the situation after the fact. I am very sorry that she read that post - mortified even. I don’t want to bring it up again, but I think I’ve damaged whatever respect I had from her.
lessons learned:
I am mostly moved into our brand new (both brand new to us and just plain brand new) apartment in Gas City (I’ll not say that name again - I hate it. from now on, I dub it GC, G-town, etc.) I have to be in by the end of the month, when my current lease expires. David (and his stuff) will join me there *after* the wedding.
my big stuff - furniture, books, cds, kitchen stuff, washer, dryer, etc. - all got moved in on Friday, by David, his dad, and a couple of friends from Indy. oddly enough, every other friend I had was out of town that weekend… doesn’t that sound suspicious to you? ;) (seriously, they all had plans and the moving was last minute - no grudges here)
it would have been nice to have been able to work in the new apartment on Saturday, getting things unpacked and deciding where furniture goes, but we did something much better with our day. a dear friend, Leslie Anne Wise, got married to Josh Stamoolis. the wedding was in KY, a four-hour drive from Indy. it was beautiful - a study in simplicity and joy. I was so glad to have been there…
the wedding took up the day, so we went back to GC after church and started working. Dave got the furniture mostly put together (he actually dismantled the coffee table and the dining room table so that he could fix them - those are the only pieces not done), like the bed, the desk, the dresser/mirror, etc. I spent most of the day fishing through boxes and putting things in the right rooms. barely made a dent. =)
stayed late enough working that I just ended up crashing there. heck, we’re already paying rent, so why not? got up this morning and made my first 1 1/2 hour drive - which turned out not to be bad at all. I like driving as long as I’m not in traffic (the stick makes *that* painful).
this week holds much work. I have to finish moving out of my apartment while helping my roommate do her moving, get a marriage license, figure out hair appointments for the wedding, call the doctor & get her to prescribe something different than what I have now, etc, etc. I’m really starting to look forward to my two-week vacation (the honeymoon) - if for no other reason than that all the busy-ness stops!
look! you can be as famous as a president, or even Elvis!
I woke up this morning not feeling too hot (I’m fine, now) so I didn’t eat breakfast. while I’m regretting my move of not grabbing a granola bar this morning on the way out, I’m not quite ready to go to lunch. I have errands to run at lunch - I have to go to the bank and deposit a couple of checks, return some stuff to Target (no, nothing you folks got me), and buy some cards - so it’s going to be a long one. I have some things I want to finish up, but I took a break to blog because my stomach is growling so much it’s hard to focus.
it was a great weekend - the sisters came to visit! it’s the second-to-last time I’ll see them together (the last time will be the wedding) until Christmas, what with mom and dad moving to Hawaii and Melissa joining Wycliffe…
we saw two TU Chorale friends get married this weekend, as well. it was a sweet wedding - small and very personal.
the roomie threw me a “personal shower,” which was great. friends from church, the sisters, and the bridesmaids were there - we went to a park in the evening, so it got dark on us. =) we brought meat for grilling, but forgot the charcoal. we brought 2 liters of soda, but forgot the cups. =) so we ended up munching on chips and salsa and brownies and drinking soda from dirty cups from Bethany’s car. that was fun, but the best part of it all was just getting to hang out with girlfriends. =)
okay, back to work. I need to finish what I’m working on so I can EAT!
stayed up WAY too late tonight… but I beat Riven.
total # of sittings: 3
total # of yawns: a million
I am eating a very delicious concoction, thrown together by yours truly. it’s based (very loosely) on an Indian recipe, but I substituted so much (for the things I didn’t have - hamburger for beef tips, potato for rice, tikka masala instead of masala paste, and I threw in cashews just for kicks) that I’m SURE it tastes nothing like what was in the book. nonetheless, this is tasty. =)
glad you guys are enjoying “store wars” - I thought it was mightily funny and couldn’t resist sharing.
something to think about, from a conversation with a girlfriend:
Stinie: I am excited about being able to join girls night. I dont have a lot of girls to hang out with. I know being married is good because I’m not alone, but it’s not the same as hanging out with girls.
Tara: exactly why I want to keep doing girls’ night.
Stinie: yep, my sister was surprised when I told her the above. I think a lot of people are surprised and that is why so many people have marital troubles. They expect their husband to fill all their needs, but that’s not possible. If you expect that you will be disappointed.
Tara: because as great as the hubby is, he’s not a girlfriend. =) and how happy and well-rounded can you be if you only ever hang out with one person?
Stinie: true, I’m shocked at how many people don’t really know that
this little movie is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while. =) It’s called grocery STORE WARS… it’s worth the download time, I assure you.
it’s a slow day, and boy, am I grateful. I’m tired. =) this weekend was so much fun. it was hard, though, too, in ways I didn’t expect.
the shower that my mom and sisters had for me was amazing. it was luau-themed, so everywhere you looked, there were bright colors, flowers, leis and drink umbrellas. they decorated the tables with sarongs they’d bought in Hawaii and very colorful plastic fish trays holding nuts and goldfish crackers. there was so much food, and there were so many games and so many presents - and most importantly, so many people! it seems like everyone who’d ever meant something to me (in PA) was there. the folks I’d grown up with at church, the parents of my high school best friends, family friends and teacher colleauges of my mother’s… plus all the husbands of those women (who spent the evening snacking in the kitchen instead of doing girly things in the luau room). Mom and Melissa took tons of pictures, and as soon as I find the cable to my camera, I’ll upload some of them to my wedding photo gallery (which is, I know, slim right now. hopefully these pictures will beef it up).
the whole time, there was a video camera aimed at me - my dad couldn’t come because he’s in the process of moving to Hawaii (Mom is joining him this week to look for a place to live)… but he sent presents to the shower with us, so having that camera running meant that he got to “see” me open them.
Jim and Jessie came for the weekend to see Dave n’ me - they brought a most excellent black forest cake (made from scratch by chef Jim) and (drumroll, please)…. they brought DDR. Dave and Jim (and now Jessie!) are DDR fiends, dancing up a sweat and pulling out 180 combos like it’s nothing. I was almost inspired to dance myself, then realized that people would watch. Dave and I are going to get some pads and the game (I just got my PS2 yesterday) - I’ll learn then. =)
…
it’s less than five weeks to the wedding! that’s quite the shock to realize. that means in just over a month, we have to have everything done - and even scarier than that, EVERYTHING is about to change. that floors me, and almost makes it hard to *do* anything I know I need to do. don’t worry, Dave, I’m not getting cold feet or thinking any other such nonsense - I’m excited and ready for this! but the changes we’re about to experience, if you sit and think about them, are staggering. what a huge commitment!
so, recap: luau, miss my Daddy, pictures online soon, yummy cake, sweaty boys, AH! I’m getting married!
lots of visits to the site the last couple of days… some from funny searches:
what is it with this butt thing? =) I guess it’s my fault for posting about that search in the first place - now search engines are finding that post about the first search and referring folks to my blog. one wonders why I fall so high on the list, though… interestingly enough, I shared the first page of hits on that search with the dooce, a blog I sometimes read that really doesn’t have anything to do with rear ends, either.
…
so, I’m at my parents’ house this weekend. my dad’s in Hawaii, so things are a little different than usual. my mother’s much more strung out - tired and stressed and missing him. the house is messier (just a little bit, but I can tell). I miss him.
spent the day running errands and the evening watching my fiance and his friend Jim (who’s visiting *us* for the weekend while we’re visiting my *folks* for the weekend) sweat like crazy (Dave sweats in a heart shape when he really gets going!)… Jim brought over DDR (Dance Dance Revolution). tomorrow, I may get some video and post it of Jim going nuts on the harder levels - he’s pretty great at it. my kid sisters love the game, so they were all in on it while I was hanging with Mom for a little bit.
tomorrow’s going to be busy - lots of prep to do for the shower/party (so many more people coming than normally come to a wedding shower), and I’m in charge of food. then, I have a meeting with the lady who’s doing our flowers, then I actually have to *go* to the shower.
ooh… gotta go. Jim’s modeling a Brewers jersey - I don’t wanna miss this. =)
we’re about to head out. I’m finishing my last couple of hours of work (well, eating lunch right now) and then we’re off. it would be raining today… I’ve been wanting it to rain all week, but it’s just started this morning. and it’ll follow us to PA, too - it’s going to rain there all weekend.
the shower last night was fun. Mom A (Brenda) took a few pictures with my camera, which I’ve posted at our aukerman.org gallery in the “Dave and Tara’s Wedding” section. it was relieving that I knew some of the people there… but I was well aware that they were there and gave such wonderful gifts because of how much they loved David. =) Dave seems amazed that people gave us some of the things that they did - but he would. he’s always surprised that people adore him.
lots of hilarity about a maglite - who knew that flower vases, silverware drawers, and lampstands could all be related to maglites?
great cake - it was made by the lady we’re hoping will make our wedding cake. if we can ever reach her. =) the punch was AWESOME - strawberry sorbet & some kind of 7up or ginger ale, with lots of cut up strawberries floating around. yum!
we got the 90’s Trivial Pursuit and played a game last night. very fun - I love Trivial Pursuit! thanks to the *two* sets of folks who bought it for us. =)
